ISLAMABAD : Auction of 3G licenses to telecommunication companies in Pakistan will take months as the Chairman PTA is still to be appointed. According to sources in Ministry of Information Technology 3G license auction would take months. In South Asia, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Nepal, Bangladesh and India are already using 3G services but Pakistan has still to cross this milestone. According to GSA, 3G and 4G services are widely adopted technologies in more than a hundred countries across the world.
The launch of 3G service is expected to raise much needed revenue of about $ one billion for the government and drive a new wave of prosperity.
For customers, the biggest gain will be high speed internet with which they will be using voice and data services more conveniently.
3G has also introduced the term “mobile broadband” because its speed and capability make it a viable alternative for internet browsing, and USB Modems connecting to 3G networks are becoming increasingly common.
According to recent figures, Pakistan has more than 120 million mobile phone subscribers and 15 million of whom use internet on their phones.
A growth in broadband penetration is expected to lead 1.3pc growth in gross domestic product (GDP) of Pakistan.
There is no shortage of seriousness on the part of the government to sell 3G licenses but still some practical steps are needed to complete the process.
The appointment of Chairman PTA is crucial to the auctioning of 3G license.
At its latest hearing on September 16, the Supreme Court directed the federal government to appoint Chairman and other members of Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) without delay.
At the previous hearing on September 2, the Supreme Court directed the government to appoint members and chairman of the PTA within 10 days. But it seems the government needs time.
It also ordered the government to auction third generation (3G) mobile spectrum licenses in two months following the appointment of the authority’s chairman.
The sale of 3G licenses has hit snags over the years but maybe this time all goes well and Pakistan joins the group of countries using 3G services.
